Four ways affecting cold pressing mould life

Today, GDM comes to share mould knowledge again. That is four ways affecting cold pressing mould life. Cold pressing mould is a special parts tool which often set on the press machine and exerts deforming pressure on the sheet metal which will be deformed in a certain shape, size and property.

Four ways affecting cold pressing mould life are as follow:

Break

When using cold pressing mould in core plate and cavity plate, the problem of broken, wreckage and crack will suddenly appear. Because the core plate and cavity plate are parts holding the most pressure, the problem mentioned before will happen. The main reasons are: positions for hardening inappropriate (over quenching or hardness layer too deep); undersize design clearance etc causing the broken, wreckage and crack problem during the core and cavity pressing. Some break off of the core and cavity plates is regional and it can be used after repairing. Some are heavy and cover large scale, which can’t be repaired and need to rearrange a new one according to the design.

Deformation

Cole pressing core and cavity mold has deformation during operation. It causes geometry deformation of the processing parts and then the specification and shape precision will be affected. This is opposite to the break-off problem. This mainly cause by the under quenching or hardness layer too thin which lead to the geometry deformation of the core and cavity plate.

Abrasion

Cold pressing core and cavity mould have frequent abrasion with the material for a long time. Large scale and long time of pressing for parts, lots of burr for the pressing parts (oversize clearance), undersize clearance between core and cavity plate etc are all the important reasons causing regional abrasion. For example, cutting edge becomes dull and corner becomes round etc.

Nicking

Reasons of nicking in core and cavity plates are: uneven adjustment between core plate and cavity plate clearance of cold pressing mould and reciprocal colliding between edges of them. Such as the nicking during the mould assembly process, excursion of the core plate and cavity plate position and uneven clearance. When installation mould without locating, the nicking will happen if clearance between core and cavity plate unsuitable.

Toolox series material is a new type of steel with high toughness and abrasion feature without inner stress. Besides, it has high pureness with very small grain and little S,P. The content of carbon is little and even. Because of the special composition design, Toolox series material processes the very good facial handling capacity. For example, Toolox44 after nitriding, its facial hardness can reach above HRC65; Toolox40 above HRC62; Toolox33above HRC58 and the depth high to 1.8mm.

The features mentioned above enable the Toolox having a special advantage to solve the broken, deformation, abrasion and nicking problems in partial press mould.

Thick steel (typical case such as cutting thickness 35mm steel), stainless steel and non-ferrous metal plate forming die; fairly typical is air conditioner fin die etc.

Material of cold die, great effect by using stainless steel 304 with 0.5mm thickness replaces DC53.
